the two columns in this picture are from completely different times and cultures, yet they stand side by side in such a harmony.

The one to the right is one of the 6 minarets of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque built in the early 17th century.

The one to the left, and the real subject of this photo, is The Obelisk, sitting on the spina of the Sultanahmet Hippodrome [link] together with the Plaited Column [link] Brought to Istanbul by Emperor Theodosius I from the city of Thebes in Egypt, where it had stood in front of the temple of Luxor, the monument was set up in the hippodrome in 390 a.D. The approximately 30-meter high obelisk is covered on all sfour sides with hieroglyphic pictograms.
